This is the  new GAA Handball Centre located in the Croke Villas site in Dublin 3.  The two-storey handball centre includes 7 no. handball courts together with a community centre, bar and restaurant space, and ancillary offices

GAA National Games Development Centre

This is the €12 million National Games Development Centre for GAA located in the National Sports Campus in Dublin 15.  The project comprises of five pitches, hurling wall and an ancillary pavilion containing offices, gym, changing areas, physio and ancillary spaces.

 

The building is firmly rooted to the landscape with the use of Liscannor stone cladding, which offers solidity to the building that reflects the GAA’s rooting in the community.  The raised centerpiece is clad in a cement board that in a streamlined architectural language illustrates the internal spatial hierarchy and announces the entrance and exit from the building.  The roof extends out to the northern side to create a seated stand area for pitch viewing.

The two latter buildings are clad with dark or light grey fibre cement panels from Equitone, the lighter panels mounted in a horizontal, staggered pattern and the darker cladding on the hall featuring vertical panels.  The combination lends the building a strong sense of dynamism (see Equitone)

The introduction of floodlights in 2005 offers huge flexibility in terms of the use of the stadium beyond its traditional Sunday afternoon timeslot.  The floodlights were introduced prior to the introduction of rugby and association football and went someway in providing for the national interest in this regard.  The design of the floodlights mimicked the existing cantilever roof and works seamlessly into the overall composition.

The project involved the infill of an existing swimming pool, to accommodate a new spa and gymnasium as part of the overall fitness centre.

Players Lounge

Croke Park Stadium

 

 
 

The GAA wanted to create an internal hospitality area for the players for use after matches.  This space, using the finest tradition of Irish craftsmen, creates an informal lounge area together with a formal dining area which can be used for both player functions and ancillary hospitality bookings within the stadium environs.  The centerpiece is a specially commissioned Waterford crystal chandelier specifically created using 70 crystal sliotars and 32 crystal Gaelic footballs on an LED lighting system.

This is an €8 million development for the GAA that contains 5 no. handball courts together with a community facility, associated offices and ancillary facilities.  The small building footprint is sensitively designed to accommodate the courts on a multi-floor level.  The building expresses the volumetric space of the handball courts in a manner that creates an architectural attention to the relief of the elevational treatments.  The building used a BMS and included rainwater harvesting, passive cooling, heating to minimise the carbon footprint to a negative level.
